Miranda House

Mirada House

Miranda House, residential college for women is one of the premier Women's Institutions of Delhi University. It was founded in 1948 by the then Vice-Chancellor Sir Maurice Gwyer; its foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten on March 7 in the same year. Located on the University campus, Miranda House is built in warm red brick with cool and spacious verandahs. Its original design was by the architect Walter George, and the college shares an architectural affinity with other colonial educational institutions of the country. In the past five decades as the college has grown, several other buildings have been added to its original design. It is now declared a heritage building and work is on to maintain its pristine glory.

Miranda offers liberal education in humanities and science to more than 2000 students. The faculty is renowned for their meritorious profile, versatile talent and dedication to the cause of education. Miranda has produced women who have excelled in various professions and have contributed in numerous ways to society. Some of the best known women are its alumni. The college has always maintained high academic standards. What is more important is the space it has provided to the students to freely express and develop views that help them respond to a changing society. Its proximity to other campus colleges enables students to participate in the academic and cultural events that take place around it.

The college also has a hostel, which happens to be among the oldest residential buildings of the university. The hostel section is laid out in a pleasing quadrangle, with gardens paced out by bottle palms. The design allows a spacious privacy, within which residents can be as they like. The dining hall, is one of the assets of the college with monastic tables and benches set along a long hall. The stretch of ground curving around the hostel towards the canteen has been cleared away for a handsome lawn and a rockery extending the social attractions of the canteen particularly on sunny winter days. It has also brought out the potential of the balcony outside the student's common room as an elevated stage for cultural events.

University of Delhi

The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. The University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly. Only three colleges existed then in Delhi: St. Stephens College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College founded in 1917, which were affiliated to the University. In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, and till today this site is the nucleus of the University (Main Campus). Apart from central administrative offices, examination offices and the sports complex, the main departments of the Faculty of Science are housed in the Viceregal Lodge Estate. The Univeristy buildings are of historical importance – many are declared as heritage sites and have recently been restored to their orginal grandeur.

Sir Maurice Gwyer, who was the then Vice Chancellor, realizing the importance of a distinguished faculty, searched for talent all over the country and brought men of eminence to this University. Over the last even decades the University has grown into one of the largest universities in India. At present, there are 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over the city, with about 3,00,000 students.

In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, the University in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern based on the multi-campus concept. The South Campus made a beginning in 1973 by starting postgraduate programmes in some departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Science as its nucleus, while the West Campus will have as its focus on Engineering and Technology.
